Resources for Fellow Hobbyists
Here are some painting techniques I find useful and links to external resources that might help you on your Warhammer 40k painting journey.
My Favorite Techniques
- Edge Highlighting: Edge highlighting is a technique used to make the details and shapes of a model stand out, especially on things like armor panels, weapon casings, and vehicle edges.
- Washing/Shading: Grimy is the name of the game. An oil wash or even diluted brown or dark green paint brushed onto a model can really bring it to life.
- Drybrushing: Drybrushing is used to make raised surfaces and textures stand out by catching them with a lighter color. It's great for things like fur, chainmail, rocky bases, creature skin, vehicle weathering (like dust), or quickly highlighting lots of rivets and edges at once.
- Basing: Basing creates a mini-environment for your figure, grounding it in the Warhammer 40k universe. It adds context (Is the Space Marine fighting in a muddy trench? A ruined city? An alien jungle?), enhances realism, tells a small story, and improves the overall visual appeal. Consistent basing across an army also helps tie the force together visually.
